URBANA, Ill. (WAND) — An Illinois State Police trooper has died following a crash in Champaign County Friday afternoon.
On Friday night, ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly announced the line-of-duty death of 28-year-old ISP Trooper Corey S. Thompsen.
ISP told WAND News that the crash happened on Friday around 3:40 p.m. on East Leverett Road at County Road 1300E. Thompsen was hit in the crash and taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries. The details of the crash are still being investigated.
“It is with a heavy heart and immeasurable sadness that I inform you of the death of Trooper Corey S. Thompsen,” said ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly. “We ask the public to give Trooper Thompsen’s family, and his ISP family, time while we grieve and work through this tragedy.”
Thompsen served almost five years as an officer with ISP. He is survived by his wife, mother, and father.
Around 8 p.m., a procession made up of over 100 law enforcement vehicles took place in Urbana. Agencies included ISP, Champaign, Urbana, University and Mahomet Police, as well as unmarked vehicles to honor the fallen trooper.
