SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A man has been charged with starting a fire in a Springfield condo complex that that left dozens of people displaced.

The Springfield Fire Department told WAND News the man was a resident of the complex.

Sangamon State's Attorney John Milhiser confirmed that Cyrus Banks appeared in court Thursday on charges of aggravated arson, residential arson, and criminal damage to property. He was denied pre-trial release and will appear in court Jan. 16.

An order for Examination of Fitness of Banks was also filed.

Fire crews responded to a fire on Taylor Avenue at 5 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Springfield Fire Department.

Heavy fire was visible from the second floor as crews arrived.

Springfield FD said the fire had spread to the attic space of a 3 story multi-residential condo complex with 36 condo units.

The Red Cross is assisting the residents. The Springfield Fire Department told WAND News that between three to four dozen people were displaced. 

The fire department said no injuries were reported, and there is no damage estimate at this time.
