Police Lights - Night (C)

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Illinois State Police have been called in to investigate after a person died in Decatur police custody.

The Decatur Police Department said officers were called out to a home for a welfare check Monday night just after 11 p.m. for a person who was in distress.

DPD said officers spent a "significant amount of time engaging in conversation to de-escalate the situation and provide appropriate assistance."

Abbott Ambulance was called out in case medical aid was needed.

DPD said officers determined the person needed medical attention and took the person into "non-arrest police custody" to get them transported to the hospital.

The police department said the person resisted officers and "force was used to overcome the resistance."

After the person was detained, police said the person began showing signs of respiratory distress and medical personnel started resuscitative efforts. The person was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

ISP was requested to conduct an independent investigation.

WAND News has reached out to ISP for more information, including requesting the address where this occurred, who called for the welfare check, and a timeline of when officers where called, when the ambulance was called, and when the person was pronounced dead.

This is a developing story.
