SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A man was shot and killed after he tried to defend a woman who was injured in a crash in Springfield, police said.
Springfield police were called out for a crash Tuesday at 9:13 p.m. in the 2000 block of North Dirksen Parkway.
Officers heard several gunshots as they arrived and saw a man had been shot near the drive thru area of McDonald's (2100 N. Dirksen).
Police found 51 year-old Jerald P. Fahey on the ground. He had been shot multiple times. The suspect was quickly taken into custody.
SPD said a woman who was injured in the accident had called Fahey for help and he had come to check on her. Police said Fahey approached the driver of the other vehicle who then shot him.
Fahey was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.
Springfield Police Crime Scene Services and detectives arrived on scene to process evidence and further investigate.
Officers identified Nicholas J. Kammueller, 46, of Rochester, as a driver involved in the accident and the suspect in the shooting. He was arrested for first degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, driving under the influence, and carrying a concealed firearm while intoxicated. He is currently at the Sangamon County Jail awaiting formal charges by the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office.
McDonald's location's owner Michael Kasprzyk provided the following statement:
"We are aware of a tragic incident that occurred in our parking on the night of April 1, 2025, where an individual was shot. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and their loved ones during this time. The safety of our guests and employees is our top priority. We are fully cooperating with local law enforcement as they investigate this matter. As this is an ongoing investigation, we will defer any additional questions to the authorities. Our restaurant remains open, and we are taking all necessary steps to ensure a safe environment for everyone."
