DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A man who died in Decatur police custody early Tuesday morning has been identified.Â
The Decatur Police Department said officers were called out to a home just after 11 p.m. Monday in the 3500 block of E. Corman St. for a person who was in distress.Â
DPD said officers spent a "significant amount of time engaging in conversation to de-escalate the situation and provide appropriate assistance."Â
Abbott Ambulance was called out in case medical aid was needed.Â
DPD said officers determined the person, later identified by the Macon County Coroner as 39-year-old Ty Doolen of Decatur, needed medical attention and took him into "non-arrest police custody" to get him transported to the hospital.Â
Police said Doolen resisted officers and "force was used to overcome the resistance."Â
After Doolen was detained, DPD said he began showing signs of respiratory distress and resuscitative efforts were needed.
Doolen was taken to St. Mary's Hospital, where he later died.Â
An Illinois State Police investigation is ongoing.
No other details are available at this time.Â
