MONTICELLO, Ill. (WAND) - The City of Monticello is banning the sale of products with THC and other psychoactive and synthetic drugs, including the sale of kratom.

Kratom is an unregulated drug made from the leaves of the kratom tree.

The leaves can stimulate or depress users depending on the dosage, and can even cause psychosis and symptoms like hallucinations and delusions.

First responders in Monticello said at a city council meeting Monday evening that they have had to respond to and treat people abusing kratom, sold in gas stations and convenience stores in the city.

The ban strictly targets the sale of the products, not possession.
