CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — The Prairie Dragon Paddlers, Illinois' first dragon boat team led by breast cancer survivors, celebrated its 10th anniversary on Sunday.
The event raised awareness and money for the group as it continues to empower the fight against breast cancer.
Executive Director Vanessa Faurie said the team provides not only an outlet for wellness, but also a space where survivors can gain a sense of camaraderie. "This is a way where we can reengage women, take back their power, be strong in survivorship and support others and help other women." she said.
Donna Campbell, a paddler on the team, explained that getting a cancer diagnosis can be isolating, but being surrounded by women on the team who share her experience is empowering. "When we get in the boat, we're a team. We work together, we do everything together. To be around women who get it -- they know. And, just that alone is worth everything." she said.
The team will continue to compete with other paddlers around the country throughout the summer. And next year, they'll compete at the International Breast cancer Survivor Dragon Boat Festival in France.
More details about future competitions can be found on the Prairie Dragon Paddlers website.
