EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WAND) - A mother is still in critical condition after a deadly crash that killed a man in Effingham Sunday.
The woman's three children, ages 4 months, 4, and 8, were injured in the crash but have been treated and released.
On Sunday June 15, at 4:18 p.m. the Effingham County Sheriff’s Department, the Effingham City Police Department and the Illinois State Police responded to a two-vehicle head-on crash on Rt. 40 at the “S” curves just west of the Country Club Road.
Officers found a man unresponsive in his vehicle. The Effingham County Coroner’s Office was notified and pronounced Harland J. Neville, 58 of Altamont, dead at the scene.
Police said Neville was eastbound on Rt. 40 in a Black Chevrolet Pick-up when he crossed the center line in the “S’” curves and struck a westbound minivan head-on.
There were four family members in the mini-van. Three children were transported to HSHS St. Anthony Hospital in Effingham and the female driver was air-lifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana.
An autopsy for Neville was performed Monday at the McLean County Coroner’s Office in Bloomington to determine the official cause of death and collect toxicology samples.
Rt. 40 was closed until 8 p.m. to conduct the investigation.
The case remains under investigation by the Effingham County Coroner’s Office and the Illinois State Police.
