Trump unharmed after shooting incident at White House correspondents' dinner
WASHINGTON (AP) — A man armed with guns and knives stormed the lobby outside a high-profile journalists’ dinner attended by President Donald Trump and multiple senior U.S. leaders. He rushed toward the ballroom before Secret Service agents swarmed him and took him into custody. The president was uninjured and was hustled away. Guests went diving under tables as the scene unfolded Saturday. Some reported hearing shots outside the vast subterranean ballroom in the Washington Hilton where the event was being held. The shooting suspect — described by Trump as a “sick person” — was identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press.
The Latest: Trump uninjured after security incident at White House Correspondents' dinner
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump was uninjured and other top White House officials were evacuated from an annual dinner of the White House correspondents association after an unspecified threat. There did not immediately appear to be any injuries on Saturday night, and one law enforcement official said a shooter had opened fire. Authorities said the incident occurred outside the ballroom where Trump and other guests were seated. It was not immediately clear what happened. The event was scrapped and will be rescheduled. The FBI said the shooter is in custody and that its Washington field office is responding to the shooting.
Talks stumble as Iran's top diplomat leaves Pakistan and Trump says he told envoys not to go
ISLAMABAD (AP) — The latest attempt at ceasefire talks between the U.S. and Iran appears to have failed. Tehran's top diplomat left Pakistan on Saturday, and President Donald Trump said he told envoys not to travel to Islamabad. The talks were meant to follow historic face-to-face negotiations earlier this month. Iranian officials have questioned U.S. trustworthiness after U.S. forces blockaded Iranian ports in response to Tehran's grip on the Strait of Hormuz. Iran had said talks with the U.S. would be indirect. The economic fallout continues. Another ceasefire, between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, was shaken as each side fired at the other.
US says it's hunting for explosive mines in latest push to open the Strait of Hormuz
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says the U.S. Navy is clearing Iranian mines from the Strait of Hormuz. The vital sea route for Persian Gulf oil is closed to most ships, and that's a strain on the global economy. Experts say sweeping for underwater explosives could take months despite a tenuous ceasefire between the United States and Iran in the war. Any future claims that the U.S. cleared the waterway where 20% of the world’s oil typically passes might fail to convince commercial freighters and their insurers that it's finally safe.
Georgia wildfires that destroyed more than 120 homes continue to threaten residents
NAHUNTA, Ga. (AP) — Two wildfires in southeastern Georgia continue to threaten homes and lives as officials warn that strong winds could spread the flames. Brantley County Manager Joey Cason posted a video to social media calling for people to “please evacuate” if they get an order to do so. The Highway 82 Fire has been burning since Monday and has destroyed at least 87 homes. The fire’s perimeter is more than 14.8 square miles. Meanwhile a second fire about 70 miles to the southwest in Clinch and Echols counties has burned more than 46.9 square miles and destroyed at least 35 homes. As of Saturday both were only about 10% contained.
Russia and Ukraine exchange attacks, killing and wounding dozens, as Zelenskyy calls for more talks
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian drone and missile strikes have killed at least five people and wounded 46 in Dnipro and other areas of Ukraine. Authorities say the overnight attacks caused fires and partially destroyed several buildings. Another person was killed in a separate attack on Saturday afternoon. In Russian-held Luhansk, the Moscow-installed governor said three people were killed by a Ukrainian attack, while in Russia itself, a Ukrainian drone strike killed a woman and seriously wounded a man in Belgorod. Romania’s Defense Ministry reported finding drone fragments in Galati. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that Ukraine is open to continuing peace talks with Russia in Azerbaijan.
Officer killed, another critically injured in Chicago hospital shooting, police say
CHICAGO (AP) — A police officer died and another was critically injured after a shooting at a Chicago hospital on Saturday, according to officials. The suspect, who was not publicly identified, was taken in custody, said Chicago police superintendent Larry Snelling. Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital said in a Facebook posting that an individual in custody of law enforcement was brought the emergency department for treatment and was “wanded upon arrival,” following the protocols. He was escorted by law enforcement at all times, the hospital said. It said that the man later fired shots at the law enforcement officers and exited the hospital building. He was later apprehended.
A sudden shift: ICE arrests drop nearly 12% after Minneapolis killings and immigration shake-up
At the peak of the crackdown, carloads of masked immigration officers were a common sight in the streets of Minneapolis, while thousands of people were being arrested every week in Texas, Florida and California. In December alone, arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents peaked at nearly 40,000 nationwide, according to data provided to UC Berkeley’s Deportation Data Project and analyzed by The Associated Press. Arrests were nearly as high the next month. But the killings by federal agents of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis and the subsequent shake-up of top immigration officials were quickly followed by a nearly 12% drop in arrests since early February.
Roommate charged with two counts of murder in death, disappearance of two USF students
Authorities have filed murder charges against the roommate of a Bangladeshi doctoral student who disappeared with his girlfriend from the University of South Florida. Hisham Abugharbieh, 26, faces two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Zamil Limon and Nahida Bristy. Limon’s remains were found Friday, but Bristy is still missing. Abugharbieh was initially taken into custody on preliminary charges, including unlawfully moving a dead body. He barricaded himself at his family’s home before surrendering. Limon and Bristy were considering marriage before they disappeared on April 16. The search for Bristy continues. Abugharbieh made an initial appearance Saturday in a Tampa courtroom, where he was ordered held without bond.
Islamic militants and separatists claim sweeping attacks across Mali
DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Islamic militants and separatists say they attacked several locations in Mali’s capital, Bamako, and other cities in one of the largest coordinated attacks in the West African country in recent years. The government gave no death toll but said that 16 people were wounded in the attacks on Saturday. Mali has previously faced insurgencies fought by militants affiliated with al-Qaida and the Islamic State group, as well as a separatist rebellion in the country’s north. The al-Qaida-linked militant group JNIM claimed responsibility for the attacks on Bamako’s international airport and four other cities. Residents in central and northern Mali reported gunfire and explosions, and videos showed militant convoys in Kati, while gunfire exchanges occurred in Kidal and Gao.
