SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A new state law will allow a special task force to have more time to create a plan for Illinois to best celebrate the Underground Railroad.

Five state lawmakers and five historians are responsible for establishing a cohesive statewide history of the Underground Railroad with new opportunities for education and tourism.

Sen. Doris Turner

Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield) spoke about the Illinois Underground Railroad Task Force during a press conference in Springfield on January 17, 2024.

Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield) said she is proud to be a member of this task force.

"This is an opportunity to tell the complete and authentic story of the Underground Railroad and Illinois' contribution to this important piece of history," Turner said. "So we will be looking at not only the conductors, but also those freedom fighters that were coming along."

The task force was previously required to submit a report with recommendations to the governor and General Assembly by July 1. However, the new law extends that deadline until the end of this year.

"This task force will bring a better understanding of how the Underground Railroad operated, as slaves escaped the south for freedom and a better life in Illinois," said Sen. Dave Koehler (D-Peoria). "By giving Illinoisans a clear understanding of the past, we are creating a greater future."
