DAVIS, Calif. (WAND) – Police say a student served cookies with the remains of her grandfather in them to people at school.
The cookies were served on Oct. 4 at Da Vinci Charter Academy in Davis, Calif., on Oct. 4, according to NBC Dallas Fort-Worth. Police say the girl made the cookies with a friend and brought them to class along with the urn where the rest of the ashes were kept.
Investigators also say some of the students knew what was in the cookies before trying them. A classmate told the station the girl told him she would give him ashes if he and someone else switched desks.
Lt. Paul Doroshov told the station the students likely wouldn’t faces charges because “it’s not a heinous or serious crime”, adding that he didn’t think the case “fits into any crime section”.
In a statement sent to parents, Principal Tyler Millsap said the school responded appropriately to what was a “particularly challenging” situation. He said the people responsible “are remorseful” and said the situation is now between the child and her family.
Nine or more students in total tried the cookies at school.
