A Shelbyville man is in a hospital after an early Saturday morning stand-off with police in Mattoon in which he was shot.

Mattoon police say the incident began around 4:43 a.m. when officers were called to 1817 South 9th Street A-9 after a woman called 911 for help.

While on the way there, officers received additional information that a man wanted to commit suicide. He was identified as Matthew D. Thomas, age 26, of Shelbyville and was at the location where officers were initially dispatched. Police say Thomas confronted officers with a handgun. After a brief stand-off, police say Thomas fired at officers and a Mattoon officer shot back. A bullet struck Thomas, but police will not reveal where he was hit.

Police say after Thomas was shot, he barricaded himself inside the residence. The Coles County Critical Response Team responded and Thomas later surrendered. He was taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center for treatment. The hospital will not release his condition, but police say he is expect to recover.

No other injuries were reported and police say the incident lasted about an hour.

Mattoon police say Illinois State Police, the Coles County States Attorney's office, Coles County Sheriff's Office, and Lakeland College Police are assisting in this incident.

Mattoon Police Chief David Griffith says no other details will be released until Tuesday or Wednesday.
