SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A group that's been working tirelessly toward redevelopment got a big boost on Thursday.

Moving Pillsbury Forward exists to redevelop the 18-acre site that was once a Pillsbury plant. By removing the dangerous structures, the area can be cleared in a way that benefits the surrounding neighborhood.

Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski (IL-13) visited the plant on Thursday to present a million dollar check that was funded through the House of Representatives’ Community Project Funding process.

“Moving Pillsbury Forward is grateful to be the recipient of a Community Project Funding award through the Office of Congresswoman Budzinski. Moving Pillsbury Forward was formed as a not-for-profit to provide a community centered collaborative approach to remediate and redevelop the former Pillsbury Mills site for the betterment of the surrounding neighborhood in Springfield, Illinois,” said Moving Pillsbury Forward President Chris Richmond.

Recent vandalism at the site has diverted resources by forcing volunteers to take time to repair holes in fencing, lock down entry areas, and take on-site safety measures.
