DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The Salvation Army of Decatur continues to be a lifeline for families in need, as highlighted in its 2024 Impact Report.
The organization has provided crucial support in the areas of housing, food assistance, and community services, reaching thousands of individuals across Macon County.

In 2024, The Salvation Army’s Men’s Shelter played a significant role for those experiencing homelessness. Last year, shelter provided 11,274 nights of stay to 329 men, with 73 successfully transitioning into permanent housing and 55 securing employment.
Additionally, 26 veterans received assistance through various programs.
"Some 20 to 30 veterans are in our men's shelter number every single year," said Kyle Karsten, Development Director. "When people have served our country and they are in those kind of circumstances, you know, that's just a whole other level."Â
TSA said hunger relief remained a top priority. It averaged 1,103 individuals receiving food pantry assistance each month. The organization also served 35,960 meals throughout the year.
The Homeless Prevention Program helped 48 families stay in their homes by providing $242,454.25 in rent and utility assistance. Also, its Pathway of Hope program assisted 21 households, including 23 adults and 42 children, by providing rent and utility assistance, education, childcare, and counseling.
The youth programs also saw active participation, with 56 kids registered and an average of 40 attending weekly activities.
Karsten told WAND News is local dollars that help keep the organization going. He said the generosity of the community is unmatched.Â
"This is what we are able to do with it (donations). This is the difference it makes."Â
