Officers received a 911 call about shots fired disturbance in the 300 block N. Grand St, in Cowden.

Shelby County Deputies and Cowden Police responded to the call.

Upon their arrival, police discovered the body of Chad Perry.

Deputies arrested Trent Buchanan, 56 of Cowden, for involuntary manslaughter.

After reviewing evidence and witness statements, the State's Attorney's Office said it is declining to pursue charges.

The State's Attorney's Office said an investigation showed Perry had approached Buchanan's residence on three separate occasions on May 7, each time being asked to leave.

They said it was clear from witness statements that Perry was experiencing a mental health crisis when the sheriff's office was called.

While waiting on officers, Perry came back for a third time and got out of his vehicle in an aggressive manner, the State's Attorney said. When asked to leave, he advanced and made verbal threats against Buchanan. Buchanan again yelled at him to stop. When he continued to advance, Buchanan fired five shots at him. He died from his wounds.
