Paulette Smith began with Animal Control on October 4, 1984. She told WAND News she worked at the highway department before working at the "old shelter" for 22 years.
"I love the animals, that's why I'm here," said Smith.
With the number of animals and pets she's encountered, Smith could write a book. She's not only dealt with cats and dogs, but an absolute plethora of creatures like alligators, snakes, and goats.
"One time I picked up a large snake that was in somebody's house. They called us and said they want to get rid of it," Smith explained. "It was the largest snake ever seen in my life and when I went down the basement, I ran back up because that's how big it was. But, then we had to go back down and get it."
Macon County Sergeant Ron Atkins said is cherished by all who know her and added that she brings a wealth of knowledge to the department.

Smith told WAND News it's not just the animals, it's the people that keep her around. She has enjoyed her colleagues over time and hopes to spend 40 more years with Animal Control.
