SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Vouchers instead of citations. It is a new program being tested by the Springfield Police Department.
The program is called "Lights On!" and instead of issuing residents citations for minor vehicle violations, officers will hand out vouchers to participating repair shops in the community.
The vouchers go up to $250, and gives drivers 14 days to to fix the broken or burned out taillights, brake lights, or turn signals they had been putting off.
Springfield Police Department Assistant Chief Ryan Leach said the program gives his department a chance to be more "community-based" and build relationships needed to further the city.
"Sometimes a citation or verbal warning don't motivate someone to get it fixed, and these hopefully motivate them to get it done quicker," Leach said.
Additional information about the program and participating locations is available online.
