SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Springfield Police Department is partnering with the Lights On! program.

The Lights On! program is an initiative aimed at fostering positive community interactions while enhancing roadway safety. It lets officers provide repair vouchers instead of citations for drivers with minor vehicle equipment violations, such as broken headlights, taillights, or turn signals.

Through this partnership, SPD officers may provide Lights On! repair vouchers that can be redeemed at participating local auto repair shops for free repairs up to $250.

"The Lights On! program is an excellent opportunity for us to engage with our community in a positive way while improving public safety," said Joseph Behl, Chief of the Springfield Police Department. "Instead of issuing a ticket, we can help drivers get the necessary repairs at no cost, making our roads safer for everyone."

The SPD’s adoption of the Lights On! Program grew out of discussions about traffic stop data in Springfield with the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois.

“We are proud to adopt this program,” said Chief Behl. “For some families, a broken taillight or turn signal can mean choosing between a minor auto repair and buying groceries. A citation for these small issues can create further financial strain, potentially leading to repeated law enforcement contact or even vehicle impoundment. While we have a duty to ensure public safety, this program gives officers a valuable tool to engage with drivers and offer a helpful solution—rather than a ticket or fine.”

Funding for the Lights On! program was made possible through a grant from the State of Illinois.

Residents who receive a Lights On! voucher can visit the following participating repair shops to have their vehicle repairs up to $250 free of charge:

• Vern's Auto Repair, 1645 North Grand Ave East, Springfield, IL 62702

• 1 Stop Auto Shop, 2800 W Washington St., Springfield, IL 62702

• Midas, 2109 Stevenson Drive, Springfield, IL 62703

• Floyd Imports, 2320 Prairie Crossing Drive, Springfield, IL 62711
