SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Springfield School District is taking action to fight back against addictive social media features.

On Monday night the 186 Board of Education voted unanimously to join a class action lawsuit with Wagstaff and Cartmell Law Firm.

Superintendent Jennifer Gill says while social media can be a great tool for connection its causing major issues in schools.

"Social media threats, social media videos that causes threats, or bully others through those platforms- is part of the reason why we wanted to join in on this. Because that takes up a lot of our time these days, its inappropriate, it causes harm to other, it causes harm to families."

Superintendent Gill says the district already bans social media threats and sharing video of fights or violence in District 186 Schools.
