St. Joseph -Stanton Fire Protection District truck

ST. JOSEPH, Ill. (WAND) — On New Year's Day, a St. Joseph—Stanton Fire Protection District fire truck was rear-ended on Interstate 74 westbound at milepost 190, according to the Illinois State Police.

The truck was helping detour traffic when it was hit and parked.

First responders posted on their Facebook that they were helping with an accident on the interstate involving an engine and water tanker, blocking and detouring traffic.

The ISP said the first responders were helping detour traffic following a crash around 11:13 a.m.

They said ISP Troop 7 responded to a crash involving a Chrysler van that had left the roadway and hit the guard rail. The driver and passenger of the van were taken to a local hospital.

ISP said a second crash happened at milepost 191 when someone hit a St. Joseph fire department tanker truck around 11:40 a.m.

The truck was in the left lane with emergency lights on when the driver of a Hyundai Elantra hit them. ISP said their investigation showed the car's driver was behind a semi that changed lanes as it approached the fire truck. Then, the driver of the Hyundai Elantra attempted to change lanes and hit the truck.

While no one was hurt, they emphasize this incident could have been much worse.

Starting Wednesday, Scott's law requires drivers to slow down and change lanes when driving near an emergency vehicle.

Assistant Chief, Rusty Shafer with the St. Joseph—Stanton Fire Protection District issued this statement to the media:

"It is imperative to remember to slow down, move over, and pay close attention to the roadway ahead. First responders, including firefighters, law enforcement, EMS members, and tow truck operators, are all individuals with lives beyond their duties. They have friends and family who eagerly await their safe return home.

Unfortunately, Central Illinois has experienced numerous near misses in recent years, some of which have tragically resulted in the loss of lives. These incidents can be prevented with increased attention, care, and awareness. By being more mindful and cautious on the road, we can help ensure that outcomes are more positive and lives are spared. Let us all do our part to keep our roads safe for everyone."

The ISP told WAND News around 4:30 p.m. that the driver of the Hyundai Elantra was issued a citation for hitting the St. Joseph fire truck.
