SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Two plans led by Illinois Democrats would help high school students complete their FAFSA applications.

One bill would require one person in the school, whether staff or a teacher, to become a FAFSA assistant. Their role would be to help students with any problems when filling out their applications.

The other bill would require schools to allow some time out of the school day to allow students to complete their FAFSA applications.

State Sen. Dale Fowler (R-Harrisburg) said he fully supports the Democratic proposal.

"This will make it less of a burden on our local schools because they'll have time to plan and prepare a program to help students going forward," Fowler said. "You can't graduate without filling this out and this will help schools and students."

With both policies passing the Illinois Senate unanimously, they will both head to the Governors office to possibly be signed into law.
