DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — An arrest has been made after a woman was seriously hurt in a hit and run in Decatur Tuesday.

The Decatur Police Department said 36-year-old Darkece T. Johnson was arrested Tuesday on charges of aggravated DUI causing great bodily harm, DUI, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident greater than 30 minutes and failure to give aid or information.

According to police, officers responded to the intersection of Oakland Avenue and Eldorado Avenue just before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

DPD said an SUV was driving east on Eldorado when it hit a 62-year-old Decatur woman, later identified in a sworn statement as Sherry Houston. The vehicle then left the scene. A sworn statement said video from a nearby gas station had shown that the vehicle had appeared to swerve out of the way, but "at no point" before or during the accident did the SUV's brake lights activate, or stop to help the injured woman.

Houston was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and suffered "traumatic arrest" several times while receiving life-saving measures.

Police said Johnson was arrested around 11:30 a.m. the same morning.

According to police, Johnson was on parole.

The passenger in the vehicle told police that he and Johnson had been drinking and that it was an accident that Houston was hit.

The sworn stated that Johnson said in a Mirandaized interview that he had one alcoholic beverage and some over-the-counter medications, but did not drink, smoke, or take any medications after the crash had happened. Interviewers could smell alcohol coming from Johnson as he spoke. He also told police that he did not feel impaired to drive.

Over 13 hours after the crash, Johnson's BAC was still 0.055, just short of the legal limit in Illinois of .08%.

Johnson appeared in court on Wednesday and was denied pretrial release. His preliminary hearing is set for March 11.
