SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A bill requiring all teachers to report gun violence threats passed unanimously out of the House Wednesday.Â
Rep. CD Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville) said his plan calls on teachers to notify their principal once they learn of any gun threats. The principal would then have to talk with the student's parents or guardians.
The Republican filed this proposal after a parent contacted his office with concerns that their child was threatened with gun violence at school.Â
"Gun violence, especially as a law-abiding gun owner, is something that I take extremely serious," Davidsmeyer said. "We all want to put an end to gun violence, especially in schools."
House Democrats thanked Davidsmeyer for bringing this idea forward and working across the aisle on the Gun Violence Prevention Committee.
"I've stated from the beginning that our committee is going to look at the entire picture of gun violence throughout the state, and I'm really glad that we could collaborate on this," said Rep. Maura Hirschauer (D-Batavia). "It's a small piece of the puzzle, and I look forward to collaborating more with you on bills in this committee."
House Bill 1316 now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
