SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Pharmacists could have a larger inventory of contraceptives they can prescribe over the counter under an Illinois bill.

Pharmacists would be allowed to prescribe Plan B, Phexxi and Ella medication without a doctor's note. Phexxi is also a hormone free drug, which gives women more options when deciding on a contraceptive.

"By allowing pharmacists to prescribe all types of contraceptives, including non-hormonal options, this bill aims to improve access so that every individual can make the best choice for birth control," said Ventura (D-Joliet). "Women come in all shapes and sizes so it only stands to reason that medication should be tailored to them as needed."

The proposal passed out of the state Senate on a partisan 41-16 vote, with some GOP members voting in favor of the plan. Now the bill heads to the Governor's office where it could be signed into law.
