SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A proposal moving in Springfield could require health insurance companies to cover prescription vitamins.
State employee, private insurance, and managed care plans would be forced to provide the new coverage for prescription vitamins starting January 1, 2027.Â
House Democrats said this policy will not apply to vitamins purchased over the counter, but Republicans still argue the bill will cause higher insurance premiums.
"I'm sure the amazing leaders of the insurance industry, state agencies, and a variety of other areas would let us know if there is a proposed fiscal impact," Rep. Bob Morgan (D-Highland Park) said Tuesday. "I urge an aye vote."
Rep. Lisa Davis (D-Chicago) said she didn't know the amount of people that could benefit from this change. Although, the House Insurance Committee understood Davis only had an hour to learn information about the legislation before the hearing.Â
House Bill 3699 passed out of the House Insurance Committee on a partisan 11-5 vote. It now moves to the House for further consideration.Â
