MATTOON, Ill. (WAND)- An individual was sent to the hospital in critical condition, needing emergency brain surgery, after a physical altercation on Tuesday in Mattoon.
The Mattoon Police Department was alerted about an individual receiving treatment at a local hospital due to a physical altercation, on December 10.
Officers were later informed by a family member that the victim had sustained head injuries requiring emergency brain surgery.
Police allege a physical altercation took place in the 1200 block of Edgar Avenue. During the incident, the 18-year-old kicked the victim in the head while he was on the ground. Following this, a juvenile struck the victim multiple times in the head with a baseball bat.
Police opened an investigation into the altercation, and were able to identify Quenton Garcia, 18, of Mattoon, and a juvenile as suspects.
They were apprehended during a search warrant of a local residence later that morning. Garcia and the juvenile were arrested for attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery with great bodily harm, and mob action.
The juvenile was transported to the Vermillion County Juvenile Center and currently detained. Garcia was transported to the Coles County Safety and Detention Center, where he is currently detained.
Police say the victim is currently listed in critical but stable condition.
