LAWRENCE, Kan. (WAND) — A little less than a month after appearing at the NBA Draft Combine, former Illinois basketball player Terrence Shannon Jr. is set to go on trial in Douglas County Kansas.
Shannon was charged with rape in Lawrence after attending an Illinois football game against Kansas on Sept. 8, 2023 as a spectator.
On Tuesday, Shannon appeared via Zoom for a status hearing.

Earlier in the day, his case was reassigned to Judge Amy Hanley in Divison 1 of Douglas County District Court due to Judge Sally Pokorny being tied up in another trial. The state filed a motion for a continuance due to a heavy caseload, but the motion was denied by Judge Hanley.
The defense also moved to drop their previous request for a special hearing to exclude expert testimony. Tricia Bath, one of Shannon's attorneys who appeared in person, said this decision was due to his life circumstances. The NBA Draft will begin on Wednesday, June 26. If found not guilty, it's likely that Shannon will drafted.
Shannon is set to travel to Kansas for the trial, which will begin on June 10. WAND News will be live in Lawrence for trial coverage all week.
