ILLINOIS (WAND)- Schools in the area are dismissing for summer and parents are looking for ways to keep their kids entertained over summer break. Local summer programs are providing structure to kid's schedules, while giving them a safe place to learn and play. CEO of the Decatur Family YMCA, Dominic Santonassimo says that programs like their day program Camp Sokkia let kids learn valuable lessons.
"So many times kids get a whole day of school and then summertime happens and without that organized program, kids can get bored. It is really two-fold there is a youth development aspect for kids being in care during the summer and then there is adult employability."
These opportunities allow kids to grow as individuals and learn important values that they will carry with them beyond their time at camp.
"Here at the Y, we have 4-character values caring, honesty, respect and responsibility and we try to teach those aspects, but with our programs we try to add some of those STEM skills."
Most importantly Santonassimo says that kids will gain confidence in new environments and learn about the importance of diversity. The goal being that they learn that it is okay to be different and they are able to thrive in new environments.Â
"We're going to teach them that different is okay and that they can be successful in somewhere that is new."
Opportunities to participate in summer programs will keep the kids busy and encourage them to keep learning while school is out for summer. Financial assistance is available for children and families in need.
On June 20th the Decatur YMCA will host a Dinking Pickleball Tournament, the tournament will cost $25 to enter. The proceeds will contribute to their annual campaign which will help kids be able to attend any of the camps hosted by the Decatur Family YMCA that otherwise would not be able to afford the fees to participate.Â
