EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WAND) – The Heart Theatre, a historic cornerstone of downtown Effingham, has entered a new chapter thanks to a donation from former Effingham resident and nonprofit executive Amy Van Bergen.

On December 19, 2024, Van Bergen officially transferred ownership to The Heart Theatre, Inc., a newly formed nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing the space. Van Bergen’s has worked to preserve The Heart Theatre and create it into a venue for arts and entertainment.

In 2023, The Heart Theatre achieved a significant milestone by being added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Heart Theatre, Inc. board has collaborated with professionals in theatre design to develop a renovation plan. These efforts have included structural assessments and programming research.

To bring the vision to life, The Heart Theatre, Inc. has launched a major fundraising campaign. The funds will be used to modernize the theatre with advanced sound, lighting, and acoustic technology, as well as to expand its facilities for larger productions and community engagement opportunities.

“The Heart Theatre has always been a place that brings people together,” said Van Bergen. “I’m excited to see how The Heart Theatre, Inc. will build on its legacy and continue to enrich the lives of people in Effingham and the surrounding area.”

Executive board member Nicole Wear-Maloney echoed: “We are incredibly thankful to Amy for her generosity and for trusting us with The Heart Theatre’s future. This is a pivotal moment for us, and we look forward to introducing exciting new programs and building on The Heart’s rich history in the community.”
