Illinois State Police encourages drivers to only travel, if necessary, when roads become snow covered. Sunday and Monday morning travel could become hazardous.

ISP provides the following tips:

  • Plan your travel route, with both primary and alternative routes
  • Let someone know your routes and itinerary
  • If possible, don't travel alone
  • If possible, travel with other vehicles
  • Drive carefully and defensively watching for ice patches on bridges and overpasses
  • If weather conditions become intense, seek refuge immediately
  • If your car becomes disabled, stay with your vehicle. Run the engine and heater in short intervals. Lower a window slightly to prevent carbon monoxide build up
  • Check road conditions from the Illinois Department of Transportation

ISP also encourages drivers to make sure they're driving a reliable vehicle. Make sure components are working properly, including fuel systems, brakes, exhaust, wiper blades, oil and antifreeze, and lights. Make sure your tires have good tread and make sure your gas tank is full. When traveling, keeping cellphones charged helps in case of an emergency.

ISP also encourages traveling with specific winter items and an emergency kit. Items to include:

  • Jack and lug wrench
  • Shovel
  • Bottled water
  • Road maps
  • Extra warm clothes, boots, hat, and gloves
  • Ice scraper and snow brush
  • Cell phone and car adapter
  • Flashlight and fresh batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Matches or lighter
  • Battery jumper cables
  • Extra food
  • Blanket and/or sleeping bags
  • Paper towels
  • Pocket knife
  • Extra washer fluid
