EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (WAND) - A woman was shot and killed by police in East St. Louis, IL after Illinois State Police said she hit a squad car and drove towards a trooper.Â
ISP said troopers were investigating a report of a stolen vehicle near a convenience store in the 4500 block of South State St. just after 10 p.m. Jan. 4.Â
Troopers said when they tried to stop the vehicle, the driver put it in reverse and hit a squad car before driving towards a trooper. The trooper then fired his weapon, hitting the driver, 40-year-old Rachel E. Tarrence of Maryville, IL.Â
Troopers called for EMS and began giving medical aid. Tarrence was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. No troopers were hurt.Â
Per standard protocol, the trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.Â
ISP Division of Internal Investigation Special Agents are investigating.Â
Following the investigation, all evidence will be submitted to the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office for review.Â
