CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — In a resolution, the Champaign City Council approved bonuses and incentives for operators who assist in dispatching local emergency response units.

The council said some employees' bonuses are as high as $20,000. Both part-time and full-time employees will receive some incentive.

Champaign City Council board member Alicia Beck, said the resolution is very much needed:

"This is a critical move for us in METCAD. So, I am very pleased to see this happening. Because we really, we really need to stop the bleeding in METCAD. We desperately need people to apply for these jobs. So please, if you are interested in being a telecommunicator for our community, please apply, because we would like for you to come and work for the City of Champaign."

Council members expressed their gratitude and thanks to the current METCAD employees for their work to keep residents safe while navigating difficult circumstances.
