CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Warming centers in Champaign like the Strides Homeless Shelter and The Salvation Army are preparing for the influx of residents stopping through tonight to stay warm from the winter storm.
"The Salvation Army is here. We're here to 365 days a year and we're always wanting to and always try to meet those needs." said Corps Officer, Kenyon Sivels.
The Strides Shelter is set to accommodate around 80 people tonight and tomorrow. They're extending beds and asking for extra volunteers during this time. They're also receiving updates on the weather from the National Weather Service to better serve residents.
"They will email us to let us know weather predictions of dangerous weather. After we get those notifications, we then start planning for bed expansion." said Community Relations Coordinator, Charlene Murray.
If you're interested in volunteering, reach out to the Strides Shelter at 217-403-6120.
