(WAND) - For the first time in school history, the Teutopolis high school boys' golf team has won a state championship.
The Wooden Shoes competed at the IHSA Boys' golf state tournament in Bloomington, playing two rounds among some of the best competition in Illinois.
The team's best five players combined for a +47 performance, 11 shots better than the state runners-up in Fulton (+58). The Shoes were led by senior Coen Pennington who shot just 2-over par for the tournament, the second best among all competitors. He was accompanied by Isaac Weber (+11), Kade Pennington (+12), Mathew Habing (+22), and Owen Kremer (+29).
On the girls' side, competition was hosted in Macon County in Decatur and Forsyth. In 1A at Red Tail Run, Monticello's Cate Sanders shot an 81 in her final round to move to a 12th place overall finish, while Teutopolis's Molly Habing tied for 23rd scoring an 85. Saint Anthony's team qualified for a chance at the team title and ended the tournament in 7th place thanks to efforts by Gianna Frisbie, Adria Moberly, and Brooklyn Phillips.
No teams qualified in 2A at Hickory Point, but individually, local contenders in Natalie Zak and Makenna Peterka finished inside the top 40. Zak represented Sacred Heart-Griffin and showed poise by improving on her Round 1 performance by three strokes for a 6-over-par second day. She finished in 24th. Peterka tied for 36th just ahead of her Mahomet-Seymour teammate Brooke Hartman.
