MACON, Ill. (WAND) - This week's Matchup of the Week features a pair of rivals that are just a short trip down U.S 51 from each other.

Meridian and Central A&M will go head-to-head in what is now a Heart of Central Illinois Conference battle.

The Hawks haven't won the annual game between the two programs since 2014, but are hopeful this year will be different. Despite their 1-3 start to the season, there's always a desire to beat the players and coaches who are familiar. While the staff still preaches a "1-0 mentality" each week, those at Meridian know this game means a bit more.

"As a coaching staff it's always that 'One week at a time," said Meridian Head Coach Kyle Sparks. "It'd be lying if this one wasn't circled on a lot of people's calendars. It's the one that you really want. You're eight miles down the road from each other. They know those kids really well."

The players especially understand that earning bragging rights at this stage of the season can put either team on the path to success.

"Our schools are going against each other and we both want that win," said senior Paul Ralston. "Knowing the kids, it's more of a personal feeling. That 'I know him' sense. That rivalry will give you more motivation to go play your hardest."

The Hawks hope to claw their way to victory on Friday when they visit the Raiders. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. You can catch the highlights and postgame reaction on the Original Friday Frenzy.
