MONTICELLO, Ill. (WAND) -- One game stood between Monticello and Unity Saturday afternoon with a trip to the 3A State Championship game on the line.
The defenses would keep the game scoreless through the first quarter.
But the offenses would come alive in the second with Unity getting on the board first thanks to a Garrett Richardson running touchdown to put the Rockets up 7-0.
But it wouldn't take long for Monticello to answer, Ike Young would air it out deep and find Carter Foran for the touchdown, Sages would be down 7-6 after a missed extra point.
The offense's jelling in the second quarter Dane Eisenmenger connects with Tre Hoggard wide open down field, Rockets back on top 14-6.
In the fourth quarter, Monticello down 14-9, Sages offense finds Hunter Romano in the end zone, Monticello with their first lead of the game 15-14.
But the Rockets not phased, Eisenmenger keeps it himself and gets into the end zone, Unity back on top 20-15.
But Monticello not done yet, with less than 20 seconds left in the game, Young to his man Foran just inside the line for the go ahead touchdown.
Monticello is playing for the 3A championship for the first time since 2018 winning 23-20.
