(WAND) — Just a day after federalizing the Illinois National Guard, the Trump Administration…
One person was killed and eight others were injured in a pair of shootings downtown Chicago late Friday night following the city's official Christmas tree lighting hours earlier.
Police say a spate of shootings in Chicago has led to at least 38 injuries and seven deaths since Friday evening. On Sunday, President Donald Trump weighed in on social media and renewed his suggestion for a military intervention in the nation’s third largest city. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender, has repeatedly rebuffed Trump's calls to deploy National Guard troops in Chicago. While the city has experienced a slight uptick in shootings compared to last year, violent crime rates in the city have generally declined over the past few years in parallel with other U.S. cities, according to police data.
