Urbana Mayor DeShawn Williams is addressing growing community concerns following reports of federal immigration enforcement operations in the Champaign-Urbana area.
A new House bill aims to stop the Department of Homeland Security's use of a full-body restraint device called the WRAP. On Wednesday, Democratic Rep. Delia Ramirez introduced the “Full-Body Restraint Prohibition Act.” She points to an Associated Press investigation showing ICE used the device on deportation flights since 2020. The bill also adds new oversight and reporting rules. Advocates say ICE may not track its use as force reports require. The maker says the device can save lives.
Residents in a Southern California city want local police to stop letting federal immigration agents train at a publicly owned firing range. Some residents of Escondido say Immigration and Customs Enforcement has changed by donning masks and using hard-handed tactics in raids that turned deadly in such places as Minneapolis and Chicago. They don't want to give agents a reason to come to their city. They packed a City Council meeting Wednesday to discuss the arrangement. Similar debates have sprung up in various communities since the Trump administration has ramped up immigration enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security didn't comment on the local backlash.
