DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - It's been a terrible year thus far in the tornado department. While last week's tornadoes featured a few injuries, that wasn't the case this past Sunday. Two deaths were reported in Dix, IL, just outside the WAND coverage area to the south of I-70. Â
So far, the National Weather Service is confirming three tornadoes from Sunday in our area (not including the deadly Dix tornado). Surveys are not completed just yet, so the number and details can change. This brings the total for our area to 59 this year; the average is 20. Statewide, the fluid number of 149 will unfortunately increase. This is also a record-breaking year. Matter of fact, the last four years across Illinois rank in the top six for tornadic activity. This is a record and a race that no one wants to win. Â
Additional storms will develop later this week, but none look to exhibit tornado characteristics. If you're planning on helping with recent damage cleanup, make sure to wear the proper attire.Â
Stay safe, and stay weather-aware.Â
