DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - It has been a quiet hurricane season so far in the tropics, but the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration remains confident that the forecasted above average season will be accurate.

With September 10th being peak hurricane season, it may seem optimistic for it to be an above average season, however, a typical hurricane season produces about 14 names storms.

Currently, Tropical Storm Gabrielle is spinning in the Atlantic. So, we are half way to the average number in a season.

The typical hurricane season runs from June 1st until November 30th, meaning there is still plenty of time for 8 more storms to form in the Atlantic.

What is important to remember is that the forecast does NOT determine how many will make landfall nor does it forecast the extent of damage.

The seasonal forecast is simply just forecasting how many storms will become named and even includes how many of those named storms become hurricanes.
