DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The full moon in July is primarily known as the Buck Moon. The name originates from the indigenous peoples of North America and refers to the time of year when male deer (bucks) begin to regrow their antlers.
This month's moon is also called the Thunder Moon due to the frequent thunderstorms that occur during July. Other less common names include Hay Moon, Feather Moulting Moon, Salmon Moon, Berry Moon, Moon When the Chokecherries are Ripe, Month of the Ripe Corn Moon, Raspberry Moon, Blessing Moon, Meadow Moon and Wort Moon. Wow, that's a lot!
This full moon will also be the farthest full moon from the sun in 2025 because it occurs shortly after Earth reaches aphelion (its furthest point from the sun in its orbit). When the moon is low on the horizon, it will take on a yellowish-orange color, so take time to view the moon this Thursday evening.
Stay weather aware and stay sweaty.
