DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Severe thunderstorms have come and gone over the past few weeks. Tornadoes, on the other hand, have been thankfully almost non-existent lately. Â
The tornado season got off to a rip-roaring start in March with a combined 11 tornadoes in our area from three separate events. April added another 13. Keep in mind, the yearly average is 20, and I have not gotten to May yet. Speaking of May, nine tornadoes were tallied, which included two landspouts. Â
A landspout is a type of tornado characterized by a narrow, rope-like funnel that forms from the ground up, rather than from a rotating thunderstorm. Unlike traditional tornadoes, landspouts are not associated with a strong, rotating updraft within the storm. Instead, they form where converging winds at the surface stretch and intensify rotation from the ground upwards into a developing cloud.

Now back to the monthly count. June produced one day of tornadic activity, but it was a doozy that added another 11 tornadoes. July had some funnels, but no reported tornadoes. So far in August, there was one tornado back on the 16th. It was rated an EFU for unknown intensity. The reason is that it touched down briefly in a cornfield, and the National Weather Service cannot measure damage from corn. Â
To summarize, it has been a crazy year of weather, and there are more changes headed our way this weekend. While a thunderstorm cannot be ruled out for the second half of Saturday, no tornadic activity is expected. Â
Stay safe, enjoy your weekend and stay sweaty.Â
