DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Our part of central Illinois has had to deal with 38 tornadoes so far this year (over 100 across the state which leads the nation). That's almost double the yearly average, and we're still in the heart of severe weather season!
The 38 twisters occurred during five events this year. At this time last year, which was another big year, there were 33 twisters during seven events. Last year ended with 54 during 11 events. Â
The good news? No severe weather is forecast through the holiday weekend. For a change, relatively quiet weather will grip the region. There's even a little breeze to help prevent late night/early morning fog. Wet weather will return Friday and for part of the holiday weekend, but at least it will be non-severe.Â
Stay safe out there, and stay weather-aware.Â
