DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Winter is right around the corner, and we talked about the best way to receive snow in the WAND Winter Weather Special. However, that doesn't mean we touched on every scenario.

While it rarely impacts us this far south, Lake Effect Snow is a common term that we hear during the winter months. So what is it?

As cold air rushes over a warmer and larger body of water, the air closest to the lake warms and picks up moisture from the lake.

As that moisture lifts further into the atmosphere, it freezes and begins to precipitate in the form of snow.

Usually, this mainly impacts the areas closest to the body of water; however, it can sometimes leak further south.

That might be the case as we get into Sunday night and into Monday morning.

Accumulation is not likely across Central Illinois, but you may notice some snowflakes mixing with rain as temperatures approach and dip below the freezing point overnight.
