CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office says the Chicago Bears' proposal to fund a new lakefront stadium remains a “non-starter." Top aides of the governor met with the team on Wednesday. The Bears unveiled a nearly $5 billion plan calling for public funding last week for an enclosed facility to be built next to their longtime home at Soldier Field.
The Chicago Bears have at least one viable site for a new stadium in northwest Indiana and they are examining a second location as they move closer to finalizing a place for their new home. The Bears announced in June that they were moving forward with a stadium development project in Hammond, Indiana. They have completed their review of one site, and they are doing their due diligence on a second location. They could merge the two options together in some way. Chairman George McCaskey says the team will keep the same name at whatever location it chooses. The Bears have played in Illinois since the team’s founding in 1920 as the Decatur Staleys. They moved to Chicago in 1921 and called Wrigley Field home before they started playing at Soldier Field in 1971.
