DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — This weekend, Danville is turning its eyes to the skies as they fill with color for the ninth annual Balloons Over Vermilion.
From homes and highways to lakes and farmlands, these graceful giants will float above Central Illinois—a beloved tradition and a photographer’s dream.
“Balloons Over Vermilion is a big event for the Danville area ..." says Todd Spicer, one of the Hot Air Balloon Pilots.
With over 30 pilots flying over 30 hot air balloons, the sight is a favorite for those on the ground and those in the basket.
For another pilot, Dean Carlton, he has been flying these beauties for thirty years.
"I still get excited when we leave the ground!" Carlton says with a smile.
This year, two new hot air balloons are entering the lineup: Fire Dog and Police Dog! Also, an exciting addition to the weekend, a Kids Zone for families to enjoy.
For the pilots, this isn’t just another flight—it’s a feeling.
“They’re beautiful to watch. Just that tranquility—you’re at the mercy of the sky!” Spicer adds.
Gates open at 3 p.m. on Friday, with a pilot parade taking place at 6 p.m. There will also be food trucks with a variety of foods and flavors as you enjoy the skies.
The event continues this weekend.
