Chatham community rallies around family of Hayes Johnson at 'Pray for Hayes Fest'

CHATHAM, Ill. (WAND) — The Chatham community came together Saturday evening to support the family of Hayes Johnson, a young boy who was involved in a near-drowning accident earlier this summer.

Hayes is currently undergoing intensive rehabilitation at Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in Chicago, and his family has remained by his side throughout his recovery.

An organization called "The Collective" organized the fundraiser — called "Pray for Hayes Fest" — to help ease the financial burden on the Johnson family during this difficult time.

"The outpouring of love from the community brings everybody together collectively, hence the name we came up with," Collective member Jason Dolby said. "These types of moments are important for both the family and the community."

Twenty minutes before the event even officially started, the park was already filled with people showing up to show their support.

"From day one, it has been very apparent that this community is willing to show up," Collective member Celeste Malham said. "It just takes a couple of people to organize it and make it happen."

The event featured live music, food, family activities, raffles and auctions, giving the community plenty of ways to support the Johnson family.

Hayes' parents were filled with emotion after seeing so many people come out for their son.

"I just can't put into words how thankful our family is," Hayes' mom, Aubrey Johnson, said. "Strangers have come out just to pray for us and rally around us, and that is just the most beautiful thing."

Organizers said they want everyone in the community going through a difficult time to know they are not alone.

"Whether you feel like you're alone or you have a small group, just know that within this community and within central Illinois, there is a foundation now that folks can reach out to," Collective member Darin Fritz said.
