DECATUR, IL. (WAND) - Good morning and happy Sunday!
Today we are starting the day on a highly humid note as a warm front lifts northward across the region. While this front will trigger a few scattered midday showers, the primary story will be the building heat and muggy conditions. Afternoon highs are forecast to climb into the upper 80s, but with elevated dew points, real-feel heat index values will easily push into the mid-90s. A Heat Advisory is in effect for our Sangamon River Valley communities from Noon today through 7 pm. Keep an umbrella handy for any brief midday dampness, but prepare primarily for a heavy, sticky feel to the air.
Tonight, conditions will temporarily quiet down into the evening hours, offering a brief break before our next active weather window. We are tracking a cluster of thunderstorms expected to roll through the area around the midnight hour, bringing quick downpours and lightning. These showers will dry out and exit by morning, leaving us under persistent cloud cover. Temperatures will remain warm and muggy, with overnight lows only bottoming out in the lower 70s.
Monday will bring a near-repeat of today's setup, but with an even more intense surge of heat as highs climb into the lower 90s. When combined with the oppressive humidity, feel-like temperatures will easily soar into the triple digits, prompting a Heat Advisory from noon until 7:00 PM. Relief will be hard to find during the heat of the day, but we will watch for another round of scattered storms to return late Monday evening and persist overnight.
Rest of the Week:Â Looking ahead, this unsettled weather pattern shows no signs of breaking just yet, as daily chances for showers and thunderstorms linger throughout the rest of the week. While the persistent threat of rain may disrupt some outdoor plans, the frequent cloud cover and wet weather will serve a helpful purpose by bringing an end to the oppressive heat. Temperatures will gradually trend downward, cooling us back into much more comfortable territory as the week progresses.
