CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND)- Community members gathered at Skelton Park Sunday to celebrate the names and sounds that have shaped music history. A new tribute wall honors the legacy of the local black musicians in Champaign-Urbana.
"We wanted to make sure this wall stands for quite a while to make sure that it leaves a lasting impression on the community," said Robert White.
The tribute wall has more than 90 black musicians and artists with roots in Champaign. Jazz musician Nathaniel Banks orchestrated the project.
"Black music is a major part of black culture, and our children need to know that in Champaign we have been major contributors. It makes me feel really good that this vision has come to fruition, and our young people need to know and honor their elders," Banks said.
Many in the community have relatives being honored on the wall. Jazz guitarist Lemont Parsons is on the wall, and his son, Tracy Parsons, felt gratitude seeing his dad's name on the wall.
"Music was such a big part of his life. Through the self-taught musician who learned through art and music, what an unbelievable space that's been created out here to celebrate black musicians. We've got a long, rich history in our community of black musicians," Tracy said.
Local black musicians from the late 1800's to present day are reflected on the wall. Many said they appreciate the influence these musicians have had on black culture. If you are interested in learning about local black musicians, you can visit the Experience Champaign-Urbana Website.
