SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Springfield community rallied behind Sonya Massey's family at various events Sunday, 1 year after Massey was killed by a former Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy.

Family and friends gathered outside of Massey's home Sunday afternoon for a balloon release.

Memories, hugs and tears were shared as balloons were sent to the sky to honor her death.

"To the family and friends of Sonya Massey, that we hope that her memories bring you joy and smiles, even through the tears and the pain," said Co-Founder of the Springfield chapter of Black Lives Matter Sunshine Clemons. "And, you know, even though her life was taken, we hope that her light and her story can carry you forward."

The Massey Commission also hosted a bridge dedication. Joann Johnson, the co-chair of the Massey Commission, says the dedication is just another step towards justice for the Massey's.

"Five years from now, 20 years from now -- it doesn't end with the end of the trial," Johnson said. "It doesn't end with the dedication of this bridge. These are all very great, symbolic things, but we're in it to create lasting systemic change for the better."

The Massey Commission will host more events in the coming weeks. There will be healing circles on July 7 and 17, and a concert dedicated to Massey on July 10.
